Tips to Help Your Family Exercise

You might not believe it, but it really is possible to get your family fitter by making fairly simple changes to your everyday routine. You don’t need to spend money on gym memberships or on expensive equipment. Read on to discover some incredibly easy steps to getting your family’s fitness up to scratch.

Everyday activities for the kids:

  • Walk upstairs instead of using lifts
  • If possible, walk to and from school every day
  • Carry items – such as book bags, groceries, and picnic baskets to build strength.
  • Tell them to be active every day in school breaks and clubs: play in a group activity or run around with friends
  • Get involved in three to four afternoon or evening play opportunities
  • Spend as much time outdoors as possible
  • Limit time spent watching television programs, videotapes, and playing computer games, and use physical activity rather than food as a reward (e.g. family goes in-line skating)
  • Get off the sofa and change the channel manually

.

Everyday activities for you:

  • Walk up stairs instead of using lifts
  • Walk up moving escalators
  • Walk instead of driving for short journeys, or get off the bus one or two stops earlier than usual

  • If possible, walk to and from school every day
  • Get involved in evening opportunities
  • At the weekend, take longer walks. Or go to the park or swimming pool, or for a family bike ride. This is also a good opportunity for the whole family to enjoy exercising together
  • Get off the sofa and change the channel manually
  • Pack a lunch for work, if it’s hard to find restaurants and delis that offer whole grains, fruits and vegetables
  • Park the car as far away from the entrance as possible.

.

Other tips that will help:

1) Schedule a regular time throughout the week for physical activity.

2) Take turns selecting an activity for the family to do as a group each week.

3) Start a log of daily fitness activities for each family member.

4) Adapt all activities to suit those with special needs and preferences.

5) Help everyone to find something active that makes them feel successful.

6) Designate indoor and outdoor play areas where rolling, climbing, jumping, and tumbling are allowed.

7) Make chores your chance to be active.
