Use It or Lose It: Theory and Practice of Brain Exercise and Fitness for Cognitive Health

Who has not heard "Use It or Lose It". Now, what is "it"? Last week I gave a lecture at the Italian consulate San Francisco, and one of the servants areas seemed to appreciate most was learning what our brains are and how they work, with a peak in the "black box" of our mind. Without understanding at least the basics, how can we make good decisions about our own brain health and fitness Physical?

Let's review at a glance:

The brain is composed of 3 "brains" or main sub-systems, each named after the evolutionary moment in which the subsystem is expected to be published.

1) Neocortex, or Human Brain, is the area most recently, where they made a high-level thinking and complex tasks of integration. Other mammals have this part too, but less proportion of total brain volume. This is where we have our right and left hemispheres.

The neocortex is composed of

-Frontal Lobe: or the CEO of the brain, for sophisticated brain functions such as planning and conceptualization.

-Parietal lobes deal with the movement, senses, and some forms of recognition

-Temporal lobes: auditory processes and language

-Occipital: Treatment Center visual (Credit: Morphonix)

B) limbic system or mammalian brain, critical for emotions and memory,

Emotions were born here, and the appetites and urges that help us survive. For example, the amygdala is triggered to prepare us to cope with a threatening situation, resulting in our feeling of fear. The hippocampus is a key element in the formation of memory.

C) cerebellum and trunk, or reptilian brain, which regulates basic vital variables such as breathing, heartbeat and motor coordination.

When we exercise our brains, we put our neurons and connections between neurons in action.

Given the diversity of functions described above, it is clear that different activities are underway to activate different brain regions, which scientists now know, through techniques of neuroimaging. There is no one magic bullet that is best (or crosswords or computer-based programs or physical activity): We need a variety of mental stimulation or "brain exercises".

"Cells that fire together more son together" means Unions that synapses between neurons, get solidified most often the respective neurons "talk" between them.

Here you have some tips that can help put all this theory into practice:

– Be Curious! Know your local library and community colleges, search local organizations or churches that offer classes or workshops

– Perform a variety of things, including things you do not good (if you love to sing, try painting too)

– Work puzzles like crosswords and sudoku or play games like chess and bridge

– Try a computer program for brain fitness for personal training

– If you can not only thing, learn something new every day!
