Livestock and other acts against nature: A career in dog training

Do you like dogs? Are they behind you?

Eh Well, in this case, maybe you have what it takes to succeed in the strawberry and the world of canine coaching nuggets. Maybe. But before you start barking up this career tree, it could be beneficial to obtain a first information bit. Abandoning the world of dog training covers several areas of expertise, who view the dog track you want to take.

So, like, what do I know? Is it not just "Sit, Heel, Stay "?

I'm so glad you asked. Dog training covers much more than simple commands submission. Yes, a career in dressage dogs can and do require obedience training, but it can also dig a lot deeper. For example, you could become an animal behaviorist, or a behavioral consultant. These professionals burrow into the psyche of Rover, who work to dig the long buried bones of his past. Instead of chips the past, they use it to see what makes him tick (Ooh, that one even made me groan).

You mean I have to be a dog psychiatrist?

Many in the dog training field, especially behavioral, not only to study veterinary science, but also the psychology. So, somehow, you sort of become a dog "psycho" as you so rightly said. But this training contributes more than just dogs. Remember not dogs, you will generally own training and some dog owners do not realize they may be causing the behavior issues identified by their puppy pals (think the mom of the snotty kid screaming in the line of credit at the grocery store that thinks it is a good parent), and they need to learn how to interact more effectively with their pets. It is a professional dog trained to detect and correct the discrepancy.

So, how school until I'm going to need before starting my career in dog training?

Many experts in the field of dog training will tell you it takes three to five years of serious, intensive study and practice to dog training and handling for even a novice become a good coach. Become an experienced dog handler takes many years of work with animals, gaining valuable field (or park) experience. You'll probably even pay your dues with a clip here and there (bites, not the nerve-settling sips of brandy). All this is part of the price – and let you do if you're serious about a career in dog training.

Thus, there are like, college dog trainer?

There are in fact schools that offer training dogs. The program lengths and costs vary from one school to another, depending on the type of study you wish to pursue. There is even online courses at home (I am familiar with one that costs $ 995 for a study package Home Video), but anyone who wants to seriously working with dogs must find a school with real animals you can touch. Sniff around and dig up a school that fits your situation.

The Animal Behavioral College (ABC, Get it?) Costs about $ 3000 for his practical program to become a Certified Dog Trainer, which takes about six months. And there are accredited universities and colleges that conduct animal programs reporting. These dogs are not necessarily specific, but still help you start your career in dog training. Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada and Tufts University in Boston, MA are three of these universities. Standard fees would apply to these schools, but they could throw you bone and allow you to apply for financial aid. Beg … Beg … good boy!

And then I can become employed as a dog trainer and watch the scratch (money, not flesh wound) roll in?

No.

Why not?

Dog trainers happy – and there you can read "employee" Dog trainers – enter their careers in dog training because they love dogs. They work for the intrinsic pleasure of helping the best Friend of man, not for money, power or glory often associated with dog training. Initially, the novice dog trainer may even started his career working for a more experienced trainer as his assistant, trainee, or lackeys. The notes to pay for such positions, of course, Lhasa Apso size – assuming you can find a dog trainer of experience and take you under his paw. Otherwise, when was the last time you read an ad looking for a dog trainer?

How many educators dog collar careers in dressage dogs to become self-employed. Hang a shingle on the door. This was suggested by trainers network American Dog, which indicates you can have a part-time career when, nationally, trainers earn on average $ 20 per hour. Not a bad life. But Uncle Sam is always snapping at the heels of the ambitious with its own statistics growls and grunts. The Occupational Outlook Handbook, published by the U.S. Department of Labor shows that the median hourly wage of non-keepers of livestock have been $ 8.21 in 2002 (the latest year recently, they have numbers for).

So what do I do? I love puppies!

The bottom line is that a career in dog training is something you do because you have a desire, passion or drive to work with dogs, not because it is a fast, easy, lucrative career choice. As with most career choices, there are efforts. Shed your fears (regular brushing helps), put your hair shiny and get out there and claw your way to your career in dog training. Or you can just sit … Stay … roll over. Good dog.
