Introduction to Nursing Theory
One of the most important classes to take you to school nurses is Introduction to Nursing Theory. Nursing Theory has a fairly broad definition, encompassing many different schools of thought on what nursing should be or how it must be practiced. The study of nursing theory includes the learning of many models of nursing that have been proposed, many of them in the last twenty years. Understanding different models of nursing can help nursing students make their own theories and develop their own models and beliefs about their profession.
An introductory course in Nursing Theory expose you to different nursing models have been proposed and implemented in the country hospitals, and provides a framework for your own beliefs and methods nursing. You will learn the major nursing theorists of the 20th century and since, and how to make your own models nursing to be a Caregiver and more effective medical assistant.
Parts of a nursing model
All nursing theories or models have several essential parts. To be considered a theory of nursing valid model should include an evaluation method to determine the individual needs of the patient, and a method of implementation and measure appropriate patient care. Most nursing models can be used to produce a care plan that will document the patient's treatment by all of health professionals and workers who come into contact with him or her. The care plan should be flexible so it can be changed and evaluated daily based on patient needs and abilities change.
Care plans themselves be influenced by the theories behind the model nursing. Care plans are divided into five categories: meta-theories, grand theories, theories of mid-range theories and min – micro theories in the order of the range of factors considered.
A brief history of theories of nursing
Originally, the role of the nurse was to execute the orders of a doctor. Theories of Nursing which are derived from this model of patient care and biomedical were mainly focused on treating diseases rather than patients. These theories permit some variation in care based on individual patient's needs and capabilities. Theories biomedical nursing assume that all patients with same disease have the same problems and require the same care. These theories do not account for differences in patient knowledge and abilities due to socio-economic, psychological or cultural.
Social models of nursing, however, consider the patients to varying degrees viewpoints holistic. They take into account the differences between patients due to culture, economic status and social and other factors. One theorists of nursing first, if his work is only considered as an organ of the "theory of nursing", in retrospect, was Florence Nightingale, who publishes his thoughts on nursing during the Crimean War, Notes on Nursing: What it is and what it is not, in 1859.
Nightingale beliefs about nursing have influenced the shape of the profession for over 150 years. It was the first to see the nurse as more than an employee performing the orders of a physician, but rather as a Caregiver its own right, who could manipulate the environment and situation influence the patient's welfare. Since then, there have been many models of care proposed and accepted by different communities and types of nursing. The most familiar names in nursing theory include Madeleine Leininger, who concerns brought to recognize the cultural needs in nursing, and Hildegard Peplau, who introduced the idea of nursing roles and the nurse-client relationship as major influences in the quality of nursing care.
Using the theory of nursing in the real world
As a nurse, a student, you will be required to know and be able to describe the various bodies working and knowledge about nursing and nursing theories. Some programs you may require to develop and articulate your own theory nursing to help you make plans for nursing and nurses, and differentiate yourself as a nursing professional. In the real world However, you will often find that different areas of nursing subscribe to specific theories of nursing.
Although there is a huge semantic debate whether the abundance of "nursing theory" is beneficial to the profession or unnecessarily divided, there is no doubt that the study of nursing theory can help you understand nursing as a profession from multiple viewpoints, and can give you the ability to begin to develop your own concept of what it means to be a nurse, and how your actions fit a comprehensive plan to better care for your patients.
