I got this as a gift, and it came with a T317 transmitter is Should I use the chest strap in order to read my calories burned? (I do not care about the heart monitors ….)

To summarize, yes you need the chest strap so that the computer estimate approximate calories burned. He needs to know how fast your heart beats to give an average guess how much energy you use. All figures are a WAG at best, but they are a suitable starting point. Use it as a tool motivation, not a bible.
