Aquatic plants? Waterline
Of all the plants that grow in our ponds, the water lily that summarizes the subject many people. In my opinion, there are few aquatic plants or terrestrial – to compare with the pure pleasure that a succession of exotic flowers of water lily may bring.
Fortunately for waterliliophiles like me, there are many varieties to choose from, the sad thing is that most of them grow too large for small ponds that most of us have today. For this reason, in the 1900s the French hybridist Marliac Latour, among others, dedicated to the creation of miniature newer and better or dwarf varieties, many of which are classified under the category called hybrid Pygmaea. Tragically, it took much of its data ¬ cross breeding with him in his grave, but at least he left us a fabulous range of varieties of small and compact, even if the parentage of most of these plants is not fully known.
The lilies Pygmies are excellent for sinks, troughs or basins where water is no deeper than 30cm (12in). Most content will grow in just 10 cm (4 inches) of water, or even in the deepest marginal shelves of a large pond.
There are really only two notes of caution when it is to grow these varieties in small and compact. The first concerns the probability of freezing for plants in winter while being robust, the plant grow in very shallow water which, in the harshest of winter can freeze solid. The plants should be provided with sufficient depth to ensure that the rhizomes are frozen during the coldest periods. It is not possible, they should be protected, either by draining of fall in the pool, and then covering the lily with thick straw, or by lifting the plant in mid-fall and keep in water in a frost free place until planting time again.
The second warning is not so bad for the plant, but ignoring it you may lose a little color excellent with resulting plant standards. Water Lilies Small are perfect for growing the water contained in the reports, as the barrel, tub or sink, but there is a temptation for many of us in terms of a small ornamental fountain, or a regular infusion drip of some kind. All water lilies, whatever their size, do not like moving water around their leaves and stems (which suppresses flowering), and this problem may be exacerbated in a container.
