dance company audition help?
I’m 14 and I was recently accepted into a prestigious PA high school. This friday, they are having auditions for the company. There are only 2 spots for freshman and to be in the company it’s a lot of hard work and you pretty much live at the school, but that’s my passion. One problem: I don’t dance. The company consists of singing and dancing, kind of like a theater cabaret. I was talking to some seniors at the open house and their main advice was to audition for everything, so I might as well go for it. But the packet says there will be dance combinations taught to us by a dance instructor and we’ll be judged on execution, personality, and stage presence. We’ll audition in large and small groups, and I just frankly don’t want to make a total fool of myself. So I figure I won’t get in, but does anyone know of any tips, exercises, or videos on youtube and such that could teach me dance basics so I don’t look like a complete fool? Thanks.
There is not enough time between now and Friday for you to get a grasp of dance basics, especially since you don’t even know what style of dance will be needed for the audition. I have been dancing for 2 years and I still don’t know all the “basics”…What I suggest is to do some basic straddle and pike stretches, any type of stretches that you may remember from gym class or ask a friend for some stretches. When it comes time to audition, just try your best to copy the moves that you are shown. Just getting up there and trying to do something that you don’t know how to do is something to feel proud about, no matter how you do. You had the guts to try something new, good for you and good luck.
