Schwinn Stationary Bikes — Comparison of Uprights and Recumbents
Schwinn exercise bikes come in many models and price ranges and newer models appear on a fairly regular basis too. One popular bike type is the upright stationary bike. This is the type many users start with and many riders stay with these. Here’s a review of what the uprights offer especially in comparison to other design types.
Upright bikes, first of all, are often the least expensive choice. A comparable, with the same features, recumbent often costs hundreds of dollars more than the upright bike. So, if you’re looking for a quality machine, but don’t want to spend a king’s ransom, consider this type of design. But there’s more…
The uprights are also much easier to store than recumbents. The footprint of the upright is much smaller than other types. That means it’s much easier to find a place to use the bike. What’s maybe more important it’s also easier to find a place to store the thing. A recumbent exercise bike takes up far more room and almost demands a dedicated spot for it to sit since moving the machine may be almost more trouble than it’s worth.
Also, a related feature. The uprights are often quite easy to move too. Partly that’s the shape, but partly it’s the weight too. The uprights tend to be a little lighter than some other machines, though the weight variation from comparable recumbents is often quite small.
You need to watch the weight though. You want a machine that’s heavy enough to take the punishment of hard riding, but not so heavy it’s next to impossible to move around.
See, that’s one of the problems with the really cheap discount store uprights. They are light weight and literally self-destruct. What happens is the lighter equipment tends to sway and rock. That motion starts a series of events that often ends in cracked welds or joints and loosened fasteners. That leads to more swaying and rocking that causes even more damage. The construction is just too light to stand up to hard use. Buying a cheap, light-weight upright is thus a waste of money.
One the other hand, a bike like the schwinn 120 upright exercise bike weighs enough to be stable. But it’s light enough to be easy to move. Then there are the features. The 120 has a silent magnetic drive that’s whisper quiet to ride. That way you can listen to music or watch movies while you ride. Then it’s programmable so you ride simulated road courses to keep it interesting. Keeping riding interesting is a major deal. Many exercise bikes remain unused. It can be so boring to pedal away on a stationary bike. That’s why the electronics on these bikes has such great value. It’s about fighting boredom.
Schwinn exercise bikes are moderate in price, but high in value. The Schwinn 140 upright exercise bike as an example works lesser machines into the junk pile, but offers many features at a moderate price tag. With the same magnetic resistance drive and the same computer programmable workouts as the comparable recumbent stationary bikes, the upright exercise bike is just a different ride position machine with little other differences other than price.
