Exercise Bicycle Pedals

exercise bicycle pedals
Can I turn my bicycle into a turbine and lower my electrical bill?

Imagine that I had a bicycle which when pedaled, generated electricity through a turbine attached to the rear tire. With a voltage regulator attached, could I successfully plug the turbine into the wall, and get some exercise while reducing my monthly electrical bill WITHOUT endangering anything that I might have plugged in on the inside?

First of all…use of a turbine is irrelevant. It is a GENERATOR you need…not a turbine.

People commonly mix up those names. Turbines are the set of rotating blades. Generators are the rotating magnet within another magnet that produces electricity.

Confusing a generator and a turbine is like confusing a pump with a motor. You better know that a pump is not a motor. Just because the generator and turbine are commonly shaft-coupled does not make them the same device.

Second of all…you do realize that to pay anyone a practical salary to pedal a bicycle attached to a generator you will need to increase the cost of electricity by a factor of 1000. Do a simple calculation and you will see just how much of a discount your utility company is actually giving you.

If a human can output 150 Watts in steady state…that results in 0.15 kW-hr every hour.

A typical electrical energy price is 15 cents per kW-hr. That amounts to 2.25 cents of salary per hour of slave wages for any laboror using a bicycle as a generator.

If you were to pay $22.50 per hour for labor per person + overhead…that would be an increase by a factor of a thousand.

If you wanted to plug a voltage regulated generator in your wall…you will not save anything significant. Even the best cyclists cannot operate a hair drier on their own output power.
